As fans of the hit Adult Swim show know, Rick Sanchez is not a fan of “serialized drama,” and much of the Rick And Morty storyline has reflected a preference for episodic content with some very calculated moves into canonical territory.

Because of the “do it and move on” attitude of the majority of the episodes, there have been some loose ends and plotlines that haven’t been addressed again since being introduced. Reddit, a well of information and devoted fans, has created a discussion board of all the unresolved plotlines and one-off mentions that fans can delve into.

What’s Up With The Cthulu?

Anyone who’s watched the show long enough to be familiar with the title sequence knows that the final scene before it ends each season is Rick, Morty, and Summer in the spaceship holding a tiny Cthulu monster and being chased by its mother. Most times, the clips in the title sequences are scenes from that season, something that was mentioned or joked about, or some bizarre sci-fi style scenario. The only constants of the intro have been Rick and Morty being chased by frogs at the beginning, and the Cthulu scene that’s not from any season or reference.

Some Redditors think this might be a foreshadowing to a scene from the final episode. Other fans think that it was just padding for the intro, and putting it into an episode would only be to service the fans and not genuine to the tone of the show.

Is Jerry Still Beekeeping?

Other Redditors on the board want to know how Jerry’s beekeeping is going. He made a big announcement about it in “Promortyus,” and could be seen with a jar of his honey next to him on the table, although the rest of the family ignores him.

Later, in the post-credits scene, Jerry’s out in the backyard, beekeeping, and Tricia tells Summer that she thinks Jerry is hot. Other than that, viewers don’t hear or see anything else about Jerry’s beekeeping. Now, it could be like some of his other fleeting hobbies, like sockpuppetry, but Redditors are hopeful that he stayed with it.

Are They Ever Going To Get To Boob World?

The boob-themed amusement park has been mentioned a few times on the show, most recently in the “Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion,” where Rick, Morty, and Summer are on their way to the theme park for the day.

Unfortunately for Morty, Rick’s alert for a nearby anime-inspired Gotron Ferret goes off, one of a few anime-inspired characters mentioned in Rick and Morty season 5, and the trip to Boob World is canceled. Morty (and fans) are heartbroken at the lost opportunity to finally visit the theme park, and Redditors are wondering if they’ll ever get to visit Boob World, or if they’ll just have to hear all the other Mortys talking about it.

What Did The Talking Cat Make Them See?

Matthew Broderick’s guest-starring role on the show was a weird one: a talking alien cat that convinces Jerry to go to Florida with him. Why the cat showed up or where it came from are complete mysteries until Rick decides to help Jerry out and takes a brain scan of the cat – which is when the shocking part happens.

Rick is so horrified and disgusted at what he sees that he immediately begins to heave, and Jerry throws up several times, tears in his eyes. They both scream at the cat to go away, and Rick even mind blows Jerry to make him forget about what he saw. But what did they see? What did the cat do that was so awful and made Jerry worry about it seeing pictures of his parents? It’s never been addressed since.

Where’s Squanchy?

The last time fans saw Squanchy, it was in “The Wedding Squanchers” episode. He became bigger, then fought off federation agents and helped save the Smith family. But there are still many things that fans don’t know about Squanchy. When Rick and Morty use the Death Crystals in “Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat,” one of Rick’s potential deaths shown by the crystal is him being ripped in half by Squanchy wearing a strange collar.

Some Redditors think he may have been taken captive by the Federation, much like Birdperson, and think there may be a future episode of him being rescued.

Is Time-God Jessica Ever Going To Come Back?

In Jessica’s own words, in one of her best quotes, she had a lot of time to ponder about being the object in someone else’s story – was this realization a way of writing her out of the show? Morty’s obsession with Jessica has been one of the constants throughout the series, but upon finally having a first date with her in “Mort Dinner Rick Andre,” she’s captured by the Wine Portal people and lives many years stuck in time and space.

This experience leads her to tell Morty they should just be friends, and to shout, “I’m a f***ing time god!” as she walks home. Fans are saddened at the idea of this new, more exuberant Jessica being the last the show sees of her, but she hasn’t made a return to the story yet.

Who Is Mr. Poopybutthole?

Mr. Poopybutthole’s entrance to the show confused viewers everywhere. They had never seen him before, but when Beth shoots him, thinking that he’s one of the parasites featured in “Total Rickall,” he doesn’t shrivel up like the parasites. Instead, he’s almost fatally wounded and is rushed to the hospital.

This all begs the questions: who is Mr. Poopybutthole and where did he come from? A few Redditors theorize that he’s the original parasite that’s infected the audience, instead of the characters. Because Mr. Poopybutthole also watches Rick And Morty on TV, as well as being in it, other Redditors predict that he’s a director of Rick and Morty and puts himself into the episodes, Stan Lee style.

What’s With The “Time Travel Stuff” Box?

There are lots of things in Rick’s garage at the Smith house, but the thing that’s never belonged has been the cardboard box labeled “Time Travel Stuff.” Viewers of the show know that Rick is notoriously anti-time travel, because of the cliché paradoxes it creates. He even makes a point to invent around time travel in “The Vat of Acid Episode” and makes Morty jump around to different realities every time he “saves his place.”

There’s a bit of time travel in “Rattlestar Ricklactica,” but its problems are poked fun at by the show in the sheer chaos that ensues after the snakes discover it. Redditors are wondering if the box will ever be explained or what it could be for. Is it a meta ode to the show’s inspiration, Back To The Future?

Why Hasn’t Rick Replaced Diane?

The show recently revealed that Rick C-137 (who is not really from C-137 Earth) lost both his Diane and Beth at the hands of another Rick. With the point that Rick makes about everyone being replaceable, and the fact that he has quite literally replaced Beth more than once, why has he not replaced Diane? Is there no version of Earth where she hasn’t been killed?

Some Redditors have a theory that Diane’s death acts as an inciting incident for Rick’s, propelling their discoveries, so other Ricks perpetuate the event across all timelines. There’s not much information given on C-137’s Beth’s Diane, or (since C-137 was technically taken over by Cronenberg monsters, one of the worst things Morty has done to the family, so far) the show’s current Beth’s Diane, either.

What Happened In Atlantis?

Fans had to miss out on the Atlantis adventures of Rick and Morty and instead were taken to the Citadel for an update on Evil Morty during the one of the best Rick and Morty episodes, “The Ricklantis Mixup.” Redditors have a lot of questions on the matter: who were the mermaids that Rick and Morty hooked up with? Does he ever see them again?

Morty makes the comment that he “hopes it’s not just a one-time thing.” They supposedly avoided Mr. Nimbus during that outing, with him saying, “I knew that was you” when Rick mentions it in “Mort Dinner Rick Andre.”

Who Is Kyle?

Kyle has been mentioned a few times and Redditors are wondering if his identity will ever be fleshed out. From the bits of information given, viewers know that Kyle is someone that Rick used to have as a sidekick for a brief period of time.

He’s mentioned by Mr. Nimbus, and then again on Rick’s Morty Replacement Wheel in the section labeled “Kyle 2.0.” Other Redditors think it may just be a one-off joke in reference to the show Kyle XY.

Super Villain Group

There are quite a few potentially threatening villain characters on Rick and Morty, and a Reddit forum question is: where are they? One theory is that the actors that have guest-starred from Community will form a supervillain group that has been wronged by Rick and Morty.

This would include Supernova (Gillian Jacobs), Hemmorage (Joel McHale), Planetina (Allison Brie), and potentially Keith David as the President, who’s had an on-again, off-again rivalry with Rick. All of them have had potential villain “origins” and if they return, could wreak havoc on Rick and Morty.
