EVE Fanfest joins the rapidly growing list of events canceled in light of new developments surrounding the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus. The event was initially slated for April 2 - April 4 in Reykjavik, Iceland. As the virus continues to spread, more and more people continue to grow ill, and almost 3,000 people have been reported dead.
EVE Fanfest is a yearly celebration of the anniversary of EVE Online. The event is put on by CCP Games and held in the birthplace of the popular MMO game. Typically EVE Fanfest features live reveals of new development projects, presentations, and as well as video game tournaments. After the recent cancellation of Project Nova, many fans were hoping that there would be some reveal as to what is next for CCP Games.
CCP Games posted on the EVE Online website, eveonline.com, that the event is canceled this year. The company states that this decision was very difficult for them to make, but ultimately it wanted to what was best for the health and safety of its fans, staff, and the country of Iceland. CCP Games does go on to acknowledge that the situation could be very different in a month, but that is not a risk that the company was willing to make. Currently, CCP Games has not said anything about refunding those that have already purchased tickets, but the company will be releasing more information soon.
Multiple companies have decided not to attend several gaming events in the coming months because of the coronavirus scare. Sony pulled out of PAX East and GDC this year because it did not want to risk exposing any of its employees to the virus. PAX East did not have many major companies pull out, but GDC has taken a huge hit this year. The event hasn’t been canceled yet, but many large companies like Facebook and Epic Games have pulled out.
It seems like everywhere you look, there are more and more things being canceled by the coronavirus. Events are taking a huge impact, thanks to the number of people pulling out. The cancellation of EVE Fanfest is a colossal blow for fans of EVE Online, especially for those who have already made plans to attend. Hopefully, CCP Games will have some new developments to reveal to fans soon.
