Kevin Feige explains why those who were snapped out of existence by Thanos while riding an aircraft weren’t brought back mid-air in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios has already wrapped up the year with all of three films rolled out, but work never stops for the MCU architect. Aside from working behind-the-scenes for what lies ahead, he’s also busy doing the press rounds in light of Endgame’s home entertainment release.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with the story written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Endgame is the culmination of everything that transpired in the MCU’s Infinity Saga. It’s also the direct sequel to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War which ended with half of life in the universe snapped out of existence due to the heroes’ failure to stop Thanos. All living things were eventually brought back to life in Endgame thanks to Smart Hulk’s (Mark Ruffalo) secondary snap, but the logistics of how this was done remains to be favorite topic of conversation. The film, as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home established that creatures are returned on the same spot they vanished, but obviously that poses safety questions for those who were flying when The Decimation took place.
Speaking with Empire Magazine about the creative process of making Endgame and other interesting tidbits during the process, Feige was asked what happened to those who were snuffed out flying on a plane when they returned. The MCU architect insists that they’re all safe because Smart Hulk had anticipated then, therefore wishing that not only the half of life in the universe return, but they do it safely.
That’s a convenient way to put it, and frankly, perhaps the best one to go for Feige and everyone involved in the film when asked about this particular tricky question. Endgame was a highly anticipated film, and the public enjoyed it a lot evidenced by its smashing box office success making it the top grossing movie with $2.79 billion earned worldwide. However, there are some narrative turns in the film that were barely explained leaving those detail-obsessed crowd to come up with a potential explanation. Its utilization of time travel is among the most debated matter, followed by this specific query.
“If people were in an airplane when they were dusted, they didn’t return at 35,000 feet. They didn’t fall to their deaths because Smart Hulk is smart, and when he snapped… You can wish for whatever you want and you can wish for everyone to come back safely. Done."
While Feige was given a particular scenario, his comment effectively answers all questions regarding this matter. There was no accidental casualty during the return of the snap victims because Smart Hulk made sure that they all returned safety in Avengers: Endgame. Despite this, it remains a mystery how the Avengers figured out how the Infinity Gauntlet works - something that was not explicitly explained in either Infinity War or its sequel. At this point, it’s safe to say that there will always be lingering questions regarding the film, and that’s up to the viewers whether they would opt to focus on those or it was an entertaining enough flick that they would be willing to look past them.
