Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo tease that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) key moment from the trailer may not be in the film. The Russos, alongside writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, had been hard at work crafting the satisfying ending the 22-film arc that the MCU has been treading since 2008’s Iron Man. But now that the Avengers: Infinity War sequel is finally finished, the two are finally focusing on doing press for the Phase 3 capper. And while they’re usually tightlipped about any detail regarding the blockbuster, they may have revealed that the iconic scene between the Avengers’ leaders as seen in the bonus promo clip may not be in final cut of Avengers 4.
Marvel Studios rolled out a special look for Endgame in conjunction with the release of the tickets. Despite its one minute runtime, the teaser was primarily composed of fresh footage mixed with several previously released scenes from the film as the heroes attempt to live through the aftermath of The Decimation. But one of the most talked about moment from the video featured a noticeably aged Tony asking Cap “do you trust me,” to which the super soldier said “I do.” Considering their rocky relationship since their falling out in Captain America: Civil War, it was emotional for MCU fans to see as both heroes are highly rumored to bite the dust by the end of Avengers 4. Sadly, the said scene may not even be in the film.
Naming the aforementioned moment as his favorite from the Endgame trailer, FOX 5 DC’s Kevin McCarthy asked the Russos what it was like filming the scene. As Anthony prefaced their answer by saying that they obviously can’t get into details, Joe intercut him revealing “that scene isn’t in the movie.” The younger Russo continued saying: “So you know that we tell people that we manipulate trailers in order to obfuscate what happens in these films? That actually is not in the movie.” At that point the host looked quite confused but the brothers didn’t give anything away with regard to whether they’re joking or not. In the end, Anthony wrapped up their answer emphasizing that Tony and Cap’s relationship “is a very special story arc.”
Since the Russos have been behind the majority of films that directly leads to Endgame, it makes sense that they’re also the one wrapping up this narrative arc. Tony and Steve were kept separate in Infinity War and the fractured Avengers team contributed to their loss. This is the reason why one of the most anticipated things in Avengers 4 is seeing MCU’s founding members banding back together, specifically Tony and Cap putting aside their differences for the common goal. Whether or not it’ll make a difference in outcome as they face Thanos (Josh Brolin) again remains to be seen, but they’ve promised that they’ll defeat the villain whatever it takes.
With fans already aware of the two Avengers leaders eventually patching things up, it doesn’t really mater how their reunion will play out on the big screen. The said Avengers: Endgame trailer shot is already believed to be digitally altered anyway and so while that scene may still be in the film as leaked set photos confirm that it was shot, it might not go down how it was framed in the promo. At this point, it really doesn’t matter. The Russos have proven themselves with regard to hitting necessary emotional beats in their Marvel films, and considering that they were the main driving force for both Stark and Cap’s respective races in the last few years, chances are that they will also deliver with their reunion.
