The script for Edge of Tomorrow 2 is complete according to director Doug Liman. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the sci-fi action movie was a surprise hit in 2014. It received very positive reviews and earned $370 million at the box office across the globe. While the story appeared to be closed off as a single adventure, the reception to the film has fueled discussions of a sequel happening ever since.
It has been five years since Edge of Tomorrow was first released though, and the outlook on a potential new movie remains unclear. Even with the box office performance of the first film, a high $178 million budget kept the profitability of the movie down for Warner Bros. Still, development has continued to move forward in an effort to see Edge of Tomorrow 2 - or Live, Die Repeat & Repeat as Liman wants it to be called. After the hiring of a new writer earlier this year, Liman now says that the script for the sequel is once again finished.
The confirmation on Edge of Tomorrow 2’s status came from Liman during a recent interview with CBM. He revealed that he hopes the movie will happen once Cruise is done filming Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 back-to-back, especially now that the script by Matthew Robinson is complete.
This isn’t the first time that a script for Edge of Tomorrow 2 has been done though. Liman said the same thing two years ago before the completely new idea by Marshall became the basis for a rewrite. Previously, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (Race) did the script for the sequel, but their pitch was scrapped in favor of what Marshall came up with instead. Now that his script for Edge of Tomorrow 2 is also done, hopefully this will be the one that gets the sequel moving in a positive direction. But, the history with this project proves that this is not a guarantee just because they have a script.
While that may be true, the desire for Edge of Tomorrow 2 has not died down throughout the development process. Fans of the first film are still just as interested in getting another installment, and the good news for them is that the big names involved appear to still be invested too. Liman remains hopeful that he’ll be the one to direct the sequel if it does happen. Meanwhile, it is nearly impossible to envision Edge of Tomorrow 2 happening without Blunt and Cruise returning. Since the Mission: Impossible sequels will keep Cruise busy for the next year or so, a decision on whether or not this new script is worth shooting may still be a ways off. When it does come time for that verdict to be made though, hopefully it will result in the next piece of news for Edge of Tomorrow 2 to be the green-light that so many have been waiting for.
