Here’s everything we know about Last Night in Soho, including release date info, cast, and story details. Edgar Wright’s seventh feature-length film sees the director going in a slightly new direction with a pivot to the horror-thriller genre. The project marks Wright’s seventh feature film, following 2017’s Baby Driver. Last Night in Soho will also be the third movie where Wright does not work with frequent collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; he’s working with a new group of actors this time around.
Wright began his career as a director of UK TV shows, including French & Saunders, Sir Bernard’s Stately Homes, and Spaced in the 1990s. He made his feature film debut with Shaun of the Dead in 2004. The horror-comedy was the first movie in what would become known as the “Cornetto trilogy,” with subsequent installments Hot Fuzz and The World’s End arriving in 2007 and 2013, respectively. Wright is also the director behind the cult hit Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, starring Michael Cera and adapted from the graphic novel of the same name.
Last Night in Soho has been kept mostly under wraps since it first made the news back in January 2019. Despite a confirmed cast and director as well as a decent sense of the production timeline (filming kicked off in May 2019 and wrapped in August 2019), Wright’s fans were still left in the dark until the teaser and subsequent trailer were released in late May 2021. Here’s everything to expect from Last Night in Soho when it hits theaters in the fall.
Last Night In Soho Release Date
Last Night in Soho was originally assigned a September 25, 2020 release date before delays surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the date to April 23, 2021. In early 2021, Wright took to social media to share that the title was being delayed again in an effort to release the movie during a full theatrical run. With theaters opening back up across the globe, Last Night in Soho is currently arriving on October 22, 2021, in theaters.
Last Night In Soho Cast
The Last Night in Soho cast will be led by Thomasin McKenzie as Eloise, a young woman who finds herself in a different decade where she encounters her idol, Sandy. Anya Taylor-Joy, who has become a go-to actor for horror-thriller movies since her breakout performance in 2015’s The Witch, will be playing Sandy. She’s appeared in other movies that have horror or thriller elements to them, including Morgan, Split, Thoroughbreds, The Secret of Marrowbone, and The New Mutants adaptation. The pair of female leads will be seen working alongside Matt Smith, Rita Tushingham, Terence Stamp, and Jessie Mei Li, who recently starred as Alina Starkov in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. Last Night and Soho also features the final film roles for Diana Rigg and Margaret Nolan, who both passed away in 2020.
Last Night In Soho Story Details
Last Night in Soho is a psychological horror-thriller, blending some of Wright’s previous genre interests to create a wholly original movie. McKenzie will serve as the female lead of the movie as the aspiring fashion designer who finds herself transported into the 1960s after a depiction of time travel. It’s there that she finds a link to a singer named Sandy, but the connection seems to blur the line between infatuation and obsession when Eloise starts to transform her appearance to mirror that of her idol. As indicated by the title, the story will unfold in London’s Soho neighborhood, a historically seedier hub that is home to nightclubs, gambling establishments, movie theaters, and the like. Aside from the time travel element, Wright will also be featuring some frightening sequences as Eloise encounters the dangerous truth about her situation in the ’60s.
Last Night In Soho Trailer
Focus Features unveiled the first full-length trailer for Last Night in Soho on May 25th, following a minute-long teaser released a few days earlier. The eerie footage gives viewers a first look into the characters of Eloise and Sandy while the latter sings a version of Petula Clark’s “Downtown.” It’s unclear if any extra footage will arrive before the October release date, but fans finally have more insight into what to expect into Wright’s next big project.
