Edgar Wright’s new film, Last Night in Soho, is officially set for a September 2020 release. Though talk about a Baby Driver 2, a sequel to Wright’s 2017 hit crime film, continues to circulate, the fan-favorite auteur is currently working on another original movie. Set in central London, Last Night in Soho is a psychological-horror film starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin McKenzie, and Matt Smith. Wright co-wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, of Penny Dreadful fame.

Whenever Wright has a new project on the way, it quickly becomes one of cinephiles’ most-anticipated, but it was unknown when exactly viewers would be able to see what the director has in store. Since Last Night in Soho is in the midst of production, the safe money was on it premiering at some point in 2020. As it turns out, that’s precisely the case.

Focus Features announced that Last Night in Soho will debut on September 25, 2020. Focus Features is handling domestic distribution, while Universal Pictures will release it internationally. Other than the story taking place in London’s Soho district, plot details remain firmly under wraps.

Wright previously mentioned that Last Night in Soho is about “the London I’ve existed in,” suggesting the narrative is going to sport a personal touch. Throughout his career, Wright has used high-concept genre films to explore rather poignant and emotional subjects, like coming to terms with personal responsibilities and the trials and tribulations of growing older. While set pieces like Baby Driver’s car chases and Shaun of the Dead’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” bar fight are highly entertaining, character relationships have always been the beating heart of Wright’s films. It’ll be interesting to see what the deeper meaning behind Last Night in Soho is, particularly since Soho is a place Wright has spent a majority of his life. He probably has something special in mind.

The horror genre has enjoyed a new era of critical and commercial prominence over the past handful of years, and that trend is all but guaranteed to continue in 2020. Even before Last Night in Soho got its release date, there was a nice list of upcoming horror projects, including A Quiet Place 2, the Candyman reboot, and Halloween Kills. Wright’s first straight horror film is a welcome addition to that group, and it’ll be fascinating to see a different side of the director when Last Night in Soho hits theaters. Most of his filmography is obviously comedic in nature, but he’s long proven he’s adept at a variety of styles, and he should deliver a captivating and thrilling horror tale.
