Warner Bros. confirms that Hans Zimmer will compose the score for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie reboot. The announcement comes hot on the heels of news that filming of the much-hyped movie has officially begun alongside the release of an official synopsis.
For those not in the know, Dune is set in the future on a desert planet called Arrakis where warring groups come to blows over a valuable drug colloquially known as spice. It started out life as a 1965 novel by sci-fi author Frank Herbert before being adapted for the big screen by director David Lynch in 1984. Despite negative reviews, the first Dune movie amassed a cult following so the announcement that Legendary had secured the rights to a Dune reboot and nabbed a talented director like Villeneuve was met with much excitement.
Now Consequence of Sound has reported that German film composer Hans Zimmer will be scoring the music for the Dune reboot. This will be the second time that Zimmer has collaborated with Villeneuve after composing the music for Blade Runner 2049 back in 2017. Zimmer is also the brain behind the musical scores of a number of Christopher Nolan-directed movies including Inception, Interstellar and The Dark Knight trilogy in addition to other big-name movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Disney’s forthcoming remake of The Lion King.
Zimmer is just the latest in a long line of talent that has joined the much-anticipated movie. Alongside Villeneuve, who brings plenty of sci-fi experience to the table after directing Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, a number of cast members have been confirmed too including Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Beautiful Boy), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Greatest Showman). Other recent additions to the cast include Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’s Chang Chen, Ant-Man and the Wasp’s David Dastmalchian and Aquaman’s Jason Momoa who confirmed his casting in Dune last month.
The announcement that Zimmer is officially on board the production looks like good news for the Dune reboot, considering the composer already has an Academy Award under his belt (for the 1994 version of The Lion King) and a good few Oscar nominations too. As previously mentioned, Dune will be the second time Zimmer and Villeneuve have collaborated and if the positive reception to Zimmer’s score for Blade Runner 2049 is anything to go by, then it looks like Dune could be another successful collaboration for the pair. With Villeneuve at the helm, Zimmer on scoring duties and a talented cast to boot, there’s every reason to get even more excited for Dune.
